DAVE'S WORLD BEHIND THE BARBWIRE
ISSUE #14 (I think)
SPECIAL EDITION: DAVE'S BEDTIME STORY
FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 2, 2011

Greetings Everyone, I want you all to know that I am doing well here in Bastrop Texas. If you have been watching the news/weather, you already know that this part of Texas is experiencing very hot weather conditions. Last Sunday it set a new record at 112F degrees in Austin. The temperature has been over 100F for more than 80 days now. I am praying for Autumn. I am sure it is right around the corner.

I want to thank you all once again for all the cards, letters, magazines, books, and all of the support. I am sure the mail-room here hates it but I love it! It really humbles me to know how many friends I have all around the world.

For those of you who have followed me here to prison from my old website, "davesworld81.com," back in the late 90's and early 2000's, I am sure you will remember "Dave's Bedtime Stories." Well, this evening I would like to resurrect that part of my world and share it with you once again. When I find stories that touch me, I will share them with you. I may even start sharing more of my own original new stories. But for this evening I would like to share this short story with you.

No one knows how old the original story is but it has been told by story-tellers in the Middle East since before the dawn of Christianity. In 1933 Somerset Maugham found the story and retold it. Today, September 2, 2011, I found the story and this evening I would like to share it with all of you. The name of the story is: "THE APPOINTMENT IN SAMARRA"

There was a merchant in Bagdad who sent his servant to market to buy provisions, and in a little while the servant came back, white and trembling, and said, "Master, just now when I was in the marketplace I was jostled by a woman in the crowd and when I turned I saw it was Death that had jostled me. She looked at me and made a threatening gesture. Now please, lend me your fastest horse, and I will ride away from this city and avoid my fate. I will go to Samarra and there Death will not find me." The merchant lent him the horse, and the servant mounted it, and he dug his spurs into the horse's flanks and as fast as the horse could gallop he went.

Then the merchant went down to the marketplace and he saw the woman standing in the crowd and he went up to her and said, "Why did you make a threatening gesture to my servant when you saw him this morning?" She replied, "That was not a threatening gesture, it was only a start of surprise. I was astonished to see him here in Bagdad, for I have an appointment with him tonight in Samarra."

I hope you enjoyed this evening's "Bedtime Story. God Bless you all. And thank you once again for being there for me.

With Love and Respect, David Burgess
